Terms of Service

These terms cover your use of the UpRoar app and uproarme.com. By creating an account you agree to them. We've tried to write them so you can actually read them.

1. What UpRoar is

An alarm clock that requires you to complete one or more tasks before it stops, with optional stakes, an optional squad, and a streak. It is not a medical device, not a sleep diagnostic, and not a substitute for advice from a doctor. If you consistently cannot wake despite adequate sleep, that is worth raising with a clinician rather than an app.

2. Alarms can fail, and Android is why

We build UpRoar to be as hard to silence as an Android app can be: exact alarms, re-arming after a restart before the phone is even unlocked, and a foreground service that survives the app being closed. It still depends on things outside our control — battery optimisation, manufacturer app-killers, a flat battery, a phone that's switched off, a permission you declined, or an operating system update that changes the rules.

We therefore can't and don't guarantee that an alarm will ring. You accept that risk when you use the app. Our troubleshooting guide covers the settings that cause nearly every failure, and the app checks them for you.

3. Your account

You need to be at least 13 to have an account, and at least 18 to use stakes. Give us an email address you actually control, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else is using your account. You're responsible for what happens under it.

4. Stakes

Stakes are optional, off by default, and exist to make snoozing cost something. If you turn them on:

• You choose an amount between $1 and $10 per morning, and a destination.
• If you snooze or don't clear your chain, that amount is forfeited. Forfeited money passes to charity in full. It is not revenue for us and we take no cut of it.
• Forfeits are capped at $7.50 in any week, so a bad run can't compound.
• Because the money goes to a charity rather than from you to a charity you selected as a donor of record, it is not tax-deductible to you.
• Forfeits are settled by our server against the record of whether you cleared the chain. Closing the app, deleting it, or leaving the phone offline does not avoid a forfeit that was already due.
• Stakes are a commitment device, not a wager. There is no prize, no chance of winning money, and no way for you or anyone else to profit from another user's forfeit. Squad pots go to charity in full.
• If a forfeit is recorded in error, tell us and we'll reverse it. We'd rather be wrong in your favour than argue about $3.

5. Subscription

Some features require a paid subscription. Prices are shown in the app before you buy. If a free trial is offered, we'll remind you before it converts. Where you bought through an app store, that store handles billing, renewals and refunds under its own terms, and you cancel through your store account.

6. Squads

A squad exists so other people can see whether you got up, and the feed includes a roast feature. Aim it at the snooze, not the person. We may remove content or accounts for harassment, threats, hate, or anything targeting someone's protected characteristics — there's no appeal queue for this, and we'd rather lose the user than keep the content. Don't post anything into a squad you wouldn't want the other members to keep.

7. Fair use

Don't try to defeat the anti-cheat, automate clearing your chain, script the API, resell access, or reverse-engineer the app to get around a paid feature. Beating your own alarm is between you and your morning; doing it in a way that corrupts other people's squad or charity totals is not.

8. Your content

What you write — your reason for the alarm, squad posts — stays yours. You give us permission to store and display it as needed to run the service, which for a squad post means showing it to your squad. That's the extent of it.

9. Ending it

You can delete your account at any time; see the privacy policy for what we remove. We can suspend or close an account that breaches these terms. If we close your account and you had a stake pending, it is not forfeited.

10. Liability

UpRoar is provided as-is. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential loss — a missed flight, a missed exam, a missed shift — arising from an alarm that didn't ring or a task you couldn't clear. Where liability can't be excluded, it's limited to what you paid us in the previous twelve months. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing here affects the statutory rights you have as a consumer.

11. Changes

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you — particularly anything to do with stakes or money — we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect, not just by editing this page.

12. Governing law

To be completed with the operating entity's registered jurisdiction before public launch. Nothing in this clause removes your right to bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live.
